Technologies for a Greehouse Planet - Alternative Energy Explored

You are at: Oilgae Blog; see also: Oilgae - Oil & Biodiesel from Algae

Came across an interesting research paper by Martin Hoffert of New York University.

In this interesting paper, he discussed greenhouse effect, carbon sequestration rates and related issues. He goes on to explore just what types of energy alternatives we have in future - hydro, wind, geothermal, biomass, terrestrial solar, ocean thermal and tides, fission (u-235 reactors and breeders), fusion (D/T, D/3He fuel cycles & space power (LEO & GEO orbits, lunar power systems)

and looks at the challenges faced by any carbon-free technology to deliver the massive amounts of power that will be required by 2050...

In the long run, he says, "expansion of the human experiment to space may be the only
way to resolve the conflict between ever-increasing economic growth and a
sustainable environment on planet Earth (Myers and Simon, 1994; Lewis,
1996). Peter Glaser's geostationary orbit (GEO) solar power satellite (SPS)
studied as the NASA/DOE SPS Reference System of the 1970s was an early
conceptual step toward moving terrestrial energy production off the planet
(Glaser, 1968)."

Interesting paper, you can read it here (PDF format, quite a long one, 25 pages)
