Biofuels start-up nabs $5 million in funding

LS9 wants to make fake fuel out of synthetic plants to run real cars.
By Michael Kanellos, CNET News.com

March 13, 2007

LS9, a high-tech fuel company that's all about imitating nature, has received $5 million in funding, as the search to derive alternatives to fossil fuels through plants and microbes gains momentum.

The company hopes to make what it calls "renewable petroleum," a synthetic version of petroleum and other oil-based industrial products.

Some start-ups, such as Solazyme and LiveFuels, have announced plans to produce synthetic petroleum from algae. By contrast, LS9 said it will brew petroleum through synthetic biology, laboratory and industrial processes that can perform the same function as algae or microbes.

Algae on the Edge

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Aquatic Species Program identified about 300 species of algae that have the potential to produce thousands of gallons of biodiesel per acre. Researchers and entrepreneurs are on the cusp of bringing this promising technology to commercial production.

De Beers Biodiesel plan: Commercially unproven

26 Mar 2007, by: Jana Marais

The business plan of biodiesel group De Beers Fuel, which has already sold 27 franchises and 40m shares to the public, rests on technology that hasn't yet seen its economic viability being commercially proven, says this report.

De Beers Fuel is currently running only a research plant at Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) and plans to complete the first four commercial biodiesel plants within the next six to eight weeks.

The plants will initially use traditional raw materials, such as sunflower oil, which is imported. The business plan is based on the plants switching to algae oil within the next 18 months to two years.

Algae instead of corn for bio-fuel

19 Mar 2007

"Dear editor:

Algae multiplies so quickly and produces so much oxygen per square foot that ponds with a total surface area five times the size of Colorado would be enough to start to reverse our growing CO2 problem.

Algae triples in volume every day. Corn, with one crop per year, nets approximately 81 gallons bio-diesel per acre (soy nets 40). Algae yields as high as 15,000 gallons per acre.

Enough bio-diesel to replace all petroleum transportation fuels could be grown in approximately 9.5 million acres — far less than the 450 million acres used for crop farming in the U.S., and the over 500 million acres animal grazing land.

Hydrogen is dangerous (explosive), extremely expensive, and nets zero energy — that is, it uses more energy than it creates.

Algae converts CO2 to O2; is 30-50 percent oil; and converts easily to bio-fuel.

Conservation reduces present and future production of CO2. Algae reduces existing CO2.

The government needs to quit looking at corn and begin massive and wholesale funding and grants for algae.

A new state agri-business of algae farms? Or grants for ocean farming? Algae, pond scum also a planet saver? Yes, if we take action.

An alternative to the alternative?

March 14, 2007 from Blogs @ CIO - Katherine Walsh

"Does pond scum really have the potential to limit our dependence on foreign oil? Companies that are devoted to converting algae into biodiesel, such as Green Fuel Technologies and LiveFuels are banking on it.

The research surrounding algae as an alternative fuel is not particularly new. A program at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory investigating algae’s possibilities began in the late 70’s. But the relatively low cost of oil at the time, and lack of any other real drivers for R&D, led to a cut in funding a little more than a decade later."

This article from Katherine provides a basic introduction to algae as a feedstock for biodiesel. Read the full article here and don't miss the useful comments provided below the post!

Bay Area Group Aims To Turn Algae Into Fuel

MENLO PARK - Algae can be a viable source of fuel, according to a Menlo Park company working furiously to harvest energy from the gooey organisms.

LiveFuels, a small Menlo Park startup, believes algae can free the U.S. entirely from foreign oil.

This report is once again about the LiveFuels program and interactions with its founder Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones.

GSPI consortium to construct “algae-to-biodiesel” facilities in two countries

Giles Clark, London, 19 March 2007

Green Star Products, Inc. announced today that its consortium of independent companies will begin construction of two demonstration “algae-to-biodiesel” production facilities in the U.S. and abroad.

The consortium has developed a patent pending proprietary algae processing system and it also has assembled a seven-member research team, which has been in operation at the University of Baja California in Ensenada, Mexico.

Venture capitalists explore replacing crude oil with algae

By Clifford Krauss @ IHBT, March 6, 2007

Excerpts:

1. The idea of replacing crude oil with algae may seem odd, but not for people like Lissa Morgenthaler-Jones and her husband, David Jones, who are betting their careers and personal fortunes on the prospect of producing biofuel from algae.

2. It will require investment, luck and tweaking of biotechnology to succeed.

3. One goal is to find an energy-efficient way to convert algae into fuel. Farmed catfish could provide a useful source of carbon dioxide for the algae as well as a critical revenue flow to keep research going.

4. Venture capital firms and hedge funds are financing the construction of plants to produce biodiesel fuel out of vegetable oil, wind turbines and solar cells.

5. The road to algae has been a long one for the couple, and this project is a culmination of more than two years of reading and research.

6. After researching many other forms of alternative energy such as wind, hydrogen fuel cells, wave energy etc., they have decided to put their bets on algae

Is Algae the Answer? asks McIntyre @ the Stateman

While biofuels such as biodiesel and ethanol appear to be excellent alternative energy sources, unfortunately, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) predicts that ethanol and biodiesel won't supply more than 10 percent of the transportation fuels in the country. Why? Mainly because the crops we currently use can't produce enough biofuels per acre, says this article.

It continues, "The only exception is algae. At a DOE pilot plant in New Mexico, algae produced the equivalent of up to 7,600 gallons of oil per acre per year — 60 times more than any other biodiesel crop grown in the continental U.S. This DOE project demonstrated the feasibility of growing oil-rich algae species, "fertilized" with the exhaust from nearby coal-fired power plants. In fact, the algae consumed over 90 percent of injected carbon dioxide, a primary contributor to global warming. And more recent studies show that algae can also extract most of the nitrogen oxides, and perhaps the sulfur dioxide and heavy metals."
