2000 algae ponds across the country

Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder came to town Wednesday, Oct. 15, to be briefed by members of the Marshall Saline Development Corporation on the planning of the EcoAlgae plant.

"We feel really good about where the project is today from where it was three months ago," said Roy Hunter, executive director of MSDC.

Hunter called the project "a very costly enterprise. We're looking at $170 million plus to build the ethanol, biodiesel and biogas and all the other components that go in to make a green energy project."

The future site for the EcoAlgae plant has still not been determined, said Hunter, though progress on the matter is being made.

In completion of the project, Hunter said, 2000 algae ponds will be constructed across the county, with as many as 2,500 such ponds, eventually. Each pond would be one acre in size.

"If I were a betting man, I'd bet this was going to happen and it's going to happen in the next 90 days, but, things happen," Hunter said. "This project is in Saline County because something happened someplace else that brought Frank (Imo) here."

Imo is a farmer from Montgomery County and a partner in the EcoAlgae project.

This plant would be the first of its kind in the nation.

"It blows my mind to think that we might actually get it here," said Hunter. "I think that we've convinced Frank that this is where it needs to be, now it's just a matter of getting all the contracts in place."

He added, "Lieutenant Governor, whatever help you can give us would be immensely helpful."

Hunter estimated that 40 jobs will be created immediately, with up to 100 over the next two years.

"What a great time to be growing, and in renewable fuels, something that's going to be around for a long, long time," said Hunter. "And it's not the complete answer, but it is part of the answer."

Kinder mentioned he had been told by some of his rice-farmer friends that the waste stalk of rice, which was previously burned by farmers, has the densest cellulose structure in nature. Though rice is not widely grown in Missouri, it is commonly grown south of his home in Cape Girardeau.

"A lot of us think that, long term, this is more promising that corn ethanol," said Kinder.

Many waste products, including trash, are able to provide cellulosic ethanol, said Hunter. "It's an ideal project for agricultural communities."

"I'm not sure if this board I chair can do anything" to help the project along, said Kinder of the Missouri Development Finance Board, though he said he would look into the possibility.

Imo spoke of an organic fertilizer, called the Montana Micronutrient Booster, which he provided to the Midwest Research Institute, an independent, nonprofit organization, along with about 25 other organizations across the globe. MRI's findings were that the addition of MMB yielded a total of 300 percent of the algae's standard growth.

"It's nice to have these folks on board, saying that what Frank and his group have done is legitimate," said Hunter.

21 percent of the algae matter is oil, which can be turned into bio-diesel. Another 12 percent is carbohydrates, which can be made into ethanol. Yet another 50 percent is organic protein. Tyson has been involved in talks regarding the possibility of feeding hogs with this protein.

"The main thing algae feeds on is CO2, so we take the CO2 from the ethanol plant and pump it into the algae ponds. It's a closed-loop system, it's a negative carbon footprint," said Imo. "It's … what our country needs."

"We think it should be available to chickens, turkeys, everything," said Hunter. He added that it would relieve the current strain on corn.

"We need everyone around the state to be involved for it to be successful," said Hunter. "Lieutenant Governor Kinder has a tremendous number of contacts around the state. This is a very big package and involves a lot of people, and we don't want to have to repackage it every time we sell it."

"I am vitally concerned about jobs and economic development, and this is a promising project that can lead to both of those," said Kinder. "I want to be all over this in any way I can … I came to be briefed and give it a boost in whatever way I can."

During the meeting, the members of MSDC present also discussed with Kinder their desire to further develop the area at the intersection of Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 65.

Some of the problems mentioned include the need for a water tower and about three miles of piping for water service, which Hunter estimated would cost $750,000.

Biodiesel Edges Out Ethanool

Biodiesel Edges Out Ethanol

Here is a nice article from Renewable Energy Access blog that compares energy efficiencies of ethanol & biodiesel, and wow, it turns out that biodiesel is a clear winner.

Excerpts

1. Ethanol (from corn) delivers 25 percent more energy than is used (mostly fossil fuel) in producing it, though much of that 25 percent energy dividend comes from the production of an ethanol byproduct, animal feed.

2. Net energy gain is much higher -- 93 percent -- from biodiesel fuel derived from soybeans

3. Alternative crops such as switchgrass or mixed prairie grasses, which can grow on marginal land with minimal input of fossil fuel derived fertilizers and pesticides, offer the best hope for the (ethanol) future

4. Growing both corn and soybeans caused soil and water pollution from such chemicals as the nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilizer and from pesticides. But biodiesel used, per unit of energy gained, only a fraction of the nitrogen, phosphorus and pesticide (by weight) of corn production.

5. Re greenhouse gas emissions, emissions from the production and use of corn grain ethanol were 12 percent lower than the net emissions from gasoline; the reduction was 41 percent for biodiesel from soybeans.

Biofuel Cos Face Feestock Supply, Glycerine Problems

1. Securing a reliable and continuous feedstock supply is not an easy thing to do for biofuel producing companies that do not have their own plantations.

2. They also need to find a way to sell glycerine ( a by-product of biodiesel manufacture) in a profitable way. There has been a glut in the market for glycering owing to the significant increase in biodiesel production in the last two years.

3. One form of securing feedstock supplies will be through some form of supply agreement or alliance or joint ventures.

4. Securing dependable buyers of the end product is an equally difficult challenge for the feedstock producers.

5. Biodiesel producers in south east Asia should look closer to home to establish their markets.

6. South Korea, Japan & China hold great potential for biodiesel and biofuel, as these countries have expressed a commitment to reduce carbon emissions, while at the same time need to import because of a lack of domestic oilseeds.

Enironmental Evaluation of Biofuels

Abstract
One of today’s most important environmental issues is the pollution caused by traffic and transport. There is no doubt that engine emissions, particularly from cars and trucks, have been linked with severe damages to the environment and human health. The substitution of conventional fuels (gasoline, diesel) by biofuels is considered to be a potential way to reduce pollution and support sustainable agriculture. The two most common biofuels are biodiesel and ethanol. The use of biofuels is considered to be environmentally friendly. The production of biofuels, however, might cause pollution. Life-cycle assessment is the scientific evaluation method to investigate the net environmental impacts of biofuels. By means of this method it is possible to determine whether the use of biofuels or the use of conventional fuels trigger more pollution to the environment. Biofuel policy might capitalize on the production of biofuels supporting rural economic development and sustainable agriculture.

1. Introduction
The reserves – known and affordable supplies of a nonrenewable resource such as oil – are considered economically depleted when 80% of the supply has been used; the remaining 20% is considered too expensive to extract. Oil’s fatal flaw is that its reserves may be 80% depleted within 35–84 years, depending on how rapidly it is used. At the current rate of consumption, global oil reserves will last at least 44 years. Undiscovered oil that is thought to exist might last another 20–40 years. Instead of remaining at the current level, however, global oil consumption is projected to increase by about 25% by 2010. This will hasten depletion of global oil reserves.

The estimated resources of today have aworldwide distribution which implies possible difficulties in future besides the fact that they are limited, while yearly consumption still rises. Since at least 5 years the safe resources are estimated at approx. 140 billion tons of fossil oils, the uncertainties in behind with additional 50% and thus the resulting gap must be filled with biomass (biodiesel, ethanol etc.)

The southern Indian state of Andhra pradesh, in an effort to improve the livelihood opportunities for farmers and farmless labourers, has chalked out an ambitious programme to take up cultivation of biodiesel plantations in a big way in the State by providing cent per cent subsidy.

Informing this, the state's Agriculture Minister said to start with, biodiesel plantations would be taken up in one lakh acres each in the districts of drought-prone Anatapur, Mahboobnagar and Kadapa with participation by peasants and landless labourers.

Since cultivation of Jatropha under the rain-fed condition was not not giving the expected results, the Government wanted to concentrate mainly on pongamiya (Pongamia pinnata, also known as Karanj?), he added.

The Government would support the farmers and landless labourers in cultivating biodiesel plantations by paying them for maintenance from the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, for the first three years.
