Algae Stock as Alt Fuel Rises

Interest in algae as a source of FAME (fatty acid methyl ester, or biodiesel) appears to be increasing as concerns grow about the practical large scale availability of food crop and biomass biofuels feedstocks. Valcent Products, a Texan company, has formed a joint venture called Vertigro with Global Green Solutions, Inc., to build a pilot algae bioreactor and research laboratory in El Paso...A small volume of algae-derived vegetable oil convertible to FAME is expected to be produced there by mid-2008.

Livefuels, Inc. and Greenfuel Technologies as other investors in algae-based biofuels technologies.

NREL Re-starting Work on Algae Biofuels

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is going to restart its research into algae as a replacement for oil and gas. In fact, the lab is going to team up with Chevron for the project. Michael Montgomery reports, read the discussion with Al Darzins, a senior manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo.

Embraer Plans biofuel from Native Plants for Aircraft

Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer will seek to demonstrate the feasibility of a biofuel-powered jet aircraft using native plants - such as palm leaves, coconut oil and castor oil - as the fuel source.

The aircraft platform used to conduct the demonstration will remain undecided until the availability of the biofuel source is confirmed.

Embraer’s plans follow Boeing’s announcement in June that it plans in 2008 to demonstrate an algae-based biofuel on a General Electric-powered Virgin Atlantic 747 and a Rolls-Royce-powered Air New Zealand 747.

Some related developments on the algae biofuel and related fronts...

The Dutch biofuel company AlgaeLink unveiled a new photobioreactor technology, which it claims will lead to increased yields and dramatically reduce installation costs. Hans van de Ven, president of AlgaeLink, said the new approach to creating algae-based biofuels would bring down costs...

Oxfam this week became the latest group to raise concerns about the environmental and humanitarian effects of European policies which have stimulated demand for first-generation biofuels. A report from the group entitled Biofuelling Poverty (PDF format) concluded that the EU target of gaining 10 per cent of transport fuels from biofuels by 2020 was leading to the rapid expansion of biofuel plantations in developing countries that threaten to "force poor people from their land, destroy their livelihoods, lead to the exploitation of workers and hurt the availability and affordability of food".

Chevron Backs Algae as Answer to Biofuel Problems

Chevron this week announced it is to team up with US Department of Energy's National Renewable (NREL) to work on a new research project to develop an approach for turning algae into transportation fuel.

The initiative, which joins an existing Chevron-NREL research project on turning decomposing food into biofuel, will investigate various algae strains and assess their suitability for being transformed into transport fuels, including green fuel for jet engines.

NREL director Dan Arvizu said he was confident the project would lead to a rapid increase in the yield and productivity of key algae strains.

Massachusetts Initiative for Non-corn Biofuel to be Announced Soon

BOSTON - State leaders are preparing to announce a major effort to lure biofuel companies, focusing on incentives for the production of non-corn-based ethanol.

Expected to be announced soon, the proposal seeks to encourage biofuel investment by stimulating demand. Officials are hoping the plan can reap environmental benefits while nurturing an industry that capitalizes on in-state natural resources.

Gov. Deval Patrick said last week that the plan will pursue cellulosic ethanol, a non-corn-based biofuel, using resources the state can rely on, including cranberries, algae and switchgrass.
